Tapas is shutting down: where to move your webcomic and how

By the AnimeHunt team · Updated

Tapas closes at 23:59 PT on 31 March 2027, and Ink sales already stopped on 1 October 2026. Back up your episodes from your own files (Tapas has no download tool), move to a host that pays or a site you control, post a final episode that points readers to the new home, and cash out every time your balance passes US$25.

When does Tapas close and what happens to my series?

Tapas closes at 23:59 Pacific Time on 31 March 2027, and every series on it stops being readable at that moment (Tapas FAQ, 1 October 2026). Until then your series stays online unless you take it down yourself.

The timeline, from the official notice and FAQ:

DateWhat happens
22 September 2026Korean press reports that Kakao Entertainment will shut Tapas down. Creators and staff learn about it from the news (The Beat, Kotaku).
1 October 2026Tapas publishes its End of Service Notice. Ink purchases and every way to earn free Ink stop the same day (Tapas notice).
1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027Creators can keep publishing. Readers can still unlock episodes and support creators with Ink they already hold.
31 March 2027, 23:59 PTEnd of service. Unlocked episodes, leftover Ink and all titles become unavailable.

Tapas is owned by Kakao Entertainment, which bought it in May 2021 at a valuation of about US$510 million (Kakao Entertainment, 11 May 2021). At the time of the closure report Tapas had about 75,000 creators, 100,000 titles and 10 million registered users (The Beat, 22 September 2026). Kakao closed Radish, the web-fiction platform it bought in the same deal, on 31 December 2025 (Anime News Network, 11 July 2025).

Can I keep publishing on Tapas until it closes?

Yes. The FAQ says there are "no immediate plans" to restrict new uploads, so a creator can keep posting episodes, including a final episode that tells readers where the series moved. To remove a series earlier, use the Tapas Creator Inquiry Form (Tapas FAQ).

Am I still bound by a Tapas exclusivity deal?

Exclusivity is "reviewed based on the applicable agreement", in the FAQ's words, so Premium and Early Access creators should read their own contract before reposting episodes elsewhere. Ask Tapas in writing through the Creator Inquiry Form or [email protected] and keep the answer.

How do I export my episodes and reader list?

Tapas has no tool that downloads a creator's episodes or reader list. The only export it offers is "a copy of your account and personal data", which you request by emailing [email protected] (Tapas FAQ).

Three ways to secure your series before 31 March 2027:

  1. Use your own files. The original pages from your drawing software are the best copy. Check that every published episode has a matching export at full resolution.
  2. Import into your own site with Toocheke. The free Toocheke Companion plugin for WordPress can import a comic series from Tapas (added in version 2.23; from 2.24 you confirm you hold the rights). It also imports from WEBTOON since version 2.28 (Toocheke Companion changelog, version 2.32, 13 October 2026). It is the only Tapas importer for comics we found.
  3. Request your account data. Email [email protected]. Treat the reply as a record of your account, not as a backup of your comics.

Novels are a separate case. NovelCult imports a novel from its Tapas URL (NovelCult), and Ream offers migration help for Tapas writers (Ream, 2026).

Can I take my subscribers with me?

No. Tapas has no way to move subscribers, follows or comments to another platform. Readers follow you to a new home only when you tell them where it is, which is why the redirect steps below matter more than the host you pick.

Which host should I move my webcomic to?

Most creators should move to one host that pays and keep a second copy on a site they control.

The hosts pay very differently:

HostEarningCreator shareFully AI-made work
WEBTOON CanvasAds from 1,000 subscribers and 40,000 monthly views; Super Likes50% of ads; 70% of Super LikesNo general rule

  • For the biggest audience, WEBTOON Canvas reaches 156.9 million monthly users across WEBTOON as a whole (Anime News Network, 31 August 2026), but Canvas pays nothing below its thresholds and has no paid chapters.
  • For paid chapters, NamiComi pays 85% of coin unlocks and GlobalComix shares its reader subscription by pages read.
  • For a home that feels like your own site, ComicFury is free, ad-free and the destination recommended most often in the Tapas forum thread on migrating (Tapas forums, from 25 September 2026). It raised its multi-image page limit to 25 on 24 September 2026, citing the Tapas news (ComicFury forum).

None of these hosts imports a series from Tapas in one click. The full comparison, with payout minimums, mature-content rules and import tools, is in our guide to Tapas alternatives.

Our view: the platform that closes is the risk, not the platform that pays less. A copy on a site you control costs about US$3–15 a month in shared hosting and survives any host's business decision.

How do I redirect readers to my new home?

Tell readers on Tapas itself, while it is still online, and repeat it everywhere they might look for you later.

  1. Post a final episode that names the new home and shows the link as text in the image and in the author's note. The FAQ allows uploads until the end of service.
  2. Edit the series description so the first line reads "This series has moved to …".
  3. Reply in the redirect thread that Tapas readers use to find moved series (Tapas forums, from 22 September 2026).
  4. Pin a post on every social account and update the link in your bio.
  5. Give readers one stable link. A page on your own domain, or a directory listing you can edit, keeps working the next time a host closes. Point everything at that link rather than at a host's URL.

Which directories and profiles must I update?

Update every page that links to your Tapas series, starting with the ones readers search:

  • Comic directories and listings: TopWebComics and Comic Rocket, both named in K-Comics Beat's list of post-Tapas options (K-Comics Beat, 30 September 2026), and AnimeHunt.
  • Your money pages: Patreon, Ko-fi and any shop that says "read it on Tapas".
  • Your social bios and link pages.
  • Older posts that still get traffic, such as a pinned launch post or a Reddit introduction.

AniList and MyAnimeList are not on this list because they do not accept self-published series; our guide to the AniList and MyAnimeList rules explains why.

What about money I earned on Tapas?

Cash out whenever your balance reaches US$25 and ask Tapas in writing how the final balance will be paid. The FAQ of 1 October 2026 says nothing about final creator payouts, a last cash-out date or balances under US$25.

What is known:

  • Cash-out was a manual PayPal transfer from the Revenue tab once the balance reached US$25, taking about 3–5 business days (Tapas help centre, accessed 16 October 2026).
  • Ad revenue paid creators about 70% from 100 subscribers, and the Support Program passed on tips after app-store or web payment fees of 15–30% (Tapas help centre).
  • Readers can keep supporting you with Ink they already hold until 31 March 2027, so a creator can still earn after 1 October 2026, from a shrinking pool.
  • Deleting your account removes your comics, novels, comments and bookmarks permanently. Tapas tells creators in the revenue or tipping programs to cash out first (Tapas help centre).

Send your question about final settlement to [email protected] and keep the reply with your tax records.

What happens to readers who bought Ink?

Readers lose any Ink they have not spent by 31 March 2027, and "all Ink transactions are final and non-refundable" (Tapas FAQ). Unlocked episodes cannot be moved to KakaoPage, Kakao Webtoon or any other service. Readers who want to keep reading a series need its new home, which is another reason to announce it early.

What this means on AnimeHunt

AnimeHunt is a free anime and manga discovery directory and tracker that lists independent series next to studio titles. A listing on AnimeHunt gives your series one page that does not depend on any host: readers find it through search, genre pages and recommendations, rate it, and follow the link to wherever you publish now. When you move again, you change the link and keep the page, the ratings and the readers.

AnimeHunt already lists 922 series with a Tapas link, mostly licensed titles; 273 of them can also be read in English on another official service, most often Tappytoon (141), Lezhin (97) or Webcomics (69). Readers can look theirs up on our page of Tapas comics and where to read them now. Self-published Tapas series are missing, because no other database will list them. Paste your Tapas series link into the listing form and it fills in the title, synopsis and genres for you.
