Tapas alternatives: where to publish your webcomic now, compared

By the AnimeHunt team · Updated

The main Tapas alternatives are WEBTOON Canvas (largest audience, 50% of ads after 1,000 subscribers and 40,000 monthly views), GlobalComix (65–70% of a reader subscription from the first reader), NamiComi (85% of paid chapters), ComicFury (free, no ads, no earnings) and your own site with Toocheke, the only tool that imports a series from Tapas.

What are the best Tapas alternatives for webcomics?

The main Tapas alternatives for webcomics are WEBTOON Canvas, GlobalComix, NamiComi, ComicFury and a self-hosted site built with the free Toocheke theme for WordPress. All five let anyone upload a series for free. They differ in how they pay, which content they allow and how much of an audience they bring.

Tapas itself closes on 31 March 2027 (Tapas FAQ, 1 October 2026). Ink sales stopped on 1 October 2026, so the paid model that drew many creators to Tapas has already ended.

Which Tapas alternative pays creators the most?

NamiComi pays the highest share, 85% of every coin-unlocked chapter, and it is the only open platform in this list with paid chapters for indie creators (NamiComi content terms). GlobalComix pays 65% of its reader subscription (70% on the Pro plan), shared out by the pages readers read, with no threshold before a series starts earning (GlobalComix FAQ).

WEBTOON Canvas pays the lowest share of ad revenue, 50%, and only after a series passes 1,000 subscribers and 40,000 monthly page views; the creator must also be 18 or older (WEBTOON ad revenue policy). Canvas has the largest audience, though: WEBTOON as a whole had 156.9 million monthly users in the second quarter of 2026 (Anime News Network, 31 August 2026). WEBTOON lowered the Canvas payout minimum from US$100 to US$25 in January 2026 (K-Comics Beat, 13 January 2026).

A share is only worth what the audience pays. A series that cannot reach WEBTOON's thresholds earns nothing there, while the same series earns from its first reader on GlobalComix or NamiComi.

How do Patreon and Ko-fi fit in?

Patreon and Ko-fi pay creators directly and work next to any host, including ComicFury, which pays nothing itself.

Which Tapas alternatives allow mature content?

Every alternative here allows mature themes and bans or limits explicit sexual content:

  • WEBTOON Canvas rates series All Ages, Teen 13+, Young Adult 16+ or Mature 18+. Mature series are hidden from minors and need age verification. Explicit sex acts and full nudity are not allowed (The Beat, 16 August 2024).
  • GlobalComix does not accept "explicitly sexual stories (such as Hentai)"; non-sexual nudity is allowed (GlobalComix FAQ).
  • NamiComi bans sexually explicit content and shows mature series only to signed-in readers who confirm they are 18 or older (NamiComi content terms).
  • ComicFury allows adult content when the comic is flagged, but banners and icons must stay safe for work (ComicFury rules).
  • A self-hosted site follows your web host's terms.

Which Tapas alternatives allow AI-assisted comics?

ComicFury bans comics whose artwork was made with generative AI, "partially or in full" (ComicFury rules, accessed 16 October 2026). GlobalComix removed fully AI-generated works on 20 March 2026; AI assistance is still allowed when disclosed, and work "lacking human artistry" can lose monetisation (Graphic Policy, 24 March 2026).

WEBTOON Canvas has no general AI clause in its terms, but it disqualifies generative-AI entries from its contests (WEBTOON notice, 2025). NamiComi's terms and content policy of 1 October 2025 contain no AI clause.

Is there a Tapas alternative that imports my series?

No hosting platform imports a series from Tapas in one click. The only Tapas importer for comics is the free Toocheke Companion plugin for WordPress, which copies a series from Tapas into your own site after you confirm you hold the rights; it also imports from WEBTOON (Toocheke Companion changelog, version 2.32, 13 October 2026).

For the hosts, upload from your own files:

  • GlobalComix accepts bulk uploads of JPG, PNG, PDF, ZIP and CBZ files and helps with large catalogues (GlobalComix publish page).
  • ComicFury has a mass uploader and lets you back-date pages to match the original release dates. On 24 September 2026 it raised the image limit per page to 25, citing the Tapas closure (ComicFury forum).
  • WEBTOON Canvas and NamiComi take episodes one at a time. NamiComi reviews each series' first chapter before it goes live.

What are the Tapas alternatives for web novels?

Tapas hosted novels as well as comics, and the novel platforms have moved faster than the comic ones. NovelCult imports a novel from its Tapas URL (NovelCult), Ream offers migration help for Tapas writers (Ream), and Lemoon pays a 70% share once a series has five episodes (Lemoon migration guide, 24 September 2026).

Which platforms are not a Tapas alternative?

Three names that come up in searches do not take new indie series:

  • Pocket Comics closed its English, French and Korean services on 31 October 2025 (Anime News Network, 16 June 2025).
  • Tappytoon publishes licensed series and works with "select partners" only.
  • Lezhin takes pitches by email; it has no open upload.

BookWalker, Kadokawa's store, invited Tapas Premium and Early Access creators to get in touch but has published no terms (CBR, 1 October 2026).

Which Tapas alternative suits which creator?

Choose by what you need most from the move.

WEBTOON Canvas: for reach

Canvas suits a creator who wants the largest possible audience and can wait for the thresholds. Its 2026 Creator Dashboard shows daily, weekly and monthly views, and a single international Canvas publishes in English, Spanish, French, Indonesian, Thai, traditional Chinese and German (WEBTOON press release, 26 March 2026). Creators complain that Canvas series are hard to find next to WEBTOON Originals and that visibility dropped after a 2026 redesign (K-Comics Beat, 21 May 2026).

GlobalComix: for earning from the first reader

GlobalComix suits a creator who wants published splits, detailed analytics and no exclusivity. GlobalComix reports 2.8 million unique visitors and about 192,600 books (publish page, accessed 16 October 2026). It raised US$13 million and bought INKR in March 2026 (The Next Web, 18 March 2026), and creators say licensed catalogues from publishers now take more of the attention.

NamiComi: for paid chapters

NamiComi suits a creator with readers who will pay per chapter, in any language. Creator Rewards adds a flat monthly payment, from US$80 at 40,000 views to US$1,000 at 1.5 million, but it requires monetising the series exclusively on NamiComi (NamiComi Creator Rewards terms, 1 October 2025).

ComicFury: for a home you control, for free

ComicFury suits a creator who wants a site that feels like their own: custom layouts, an optional custom domain, no ads and no algorithm. It is the destination recommended most often in the Tapas forum thread on migrating (Tapas forums, from 25 September 2026). It pays nothing, so pair it with Patreon or Ko-fi.

Your own site: for permanence

A self-hosted site suits a creator who never wants to move again. Toocheke gives WordPress a vertical-scroll reader, chapters, comments and age verification, and its importer brings the Tapas back catalogue with it. The cost is hosting, about US$3–15 a month, and the work of running a site.

Many creators now publish on two or three of these at once: a paying host, a free mirror such as ComicFury, and their own domain. A closure like Tapas then costs one link, not the whole series.

What this means on AnimeHunt

AnimeHunt is a free anime and manga discovery directory and tracker that lists independent series next to studio titles. AnimeHunt is not a host yet: your chapters stay on WEBTOON Canvas, GlobalComix, ComicFury, NamiComi or your own site, and the AnimeHunt listing sends readers there. One listing can carry the link to whichever host you pick, and it stays the same page when you move.

Readers find a listed series by title, genre and recommendations, rate it, and add it to their lists, which is the discovery that both WEBTOON and GlobalComix creators say is missing for indie work. Paste your Tapas series link into the listing form and it fills in the title, synopsis and genres for you.

Keep publishing where you publish. Your listing sits next to studio titles, with ratings and recommendations, and you change the reading link whenever you move.
